Encompassing the dioceses of Chicago, Joliet, and Rockford in Illinois, the Mother Cabrini Regional Fraternity is one of 30 regional fraternities of the Secular Franciscan Order (Ordo Franciscanus Saecularis, OFS) in the USA. Formerly known as the Third Order of St. Francis, the Secular Franciscan Order is an official Order within the Catholic Church for lay men and women and was established by St. Francis of Assisi in 1221. GUEST SPEAKER: SR. MADGE KARECKI, SSJ-TOSF
Sr. Madge was born in Chicago and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Third Order of St.Francis. She studied at Loyola University, the Franciscan Institute of St. Bonaventure University and the University of South Africa. She has spent most of her years in various forms of adult
education in retreats, workshops, seminary classes at the university level.
Sr. Madge spent 22 years in South Africa where she worked with a congregation of ZuluFranciscan Sisters to help their transition to self-governance through deepening their understanding of the Franciscan charism. From 1997-2005, she was the co-author with Fr. Sergius Wroblewski, OFM, of a bi-monthly series of Franciscan Study Guides, while they devoted themselves to Franciscan education throughout the States and beyond.
Sr. Madge holds a doctorate in Missiology (the critical study of Christian mission) from the University of South Africa. She is the author of three books on mission and many articles on Franciscan topics and on mission.
She has worked with Friars, Poor Clares, TOR religious and Secular Franciscans in the U.S., Ireland, Australia, South Africa, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia, Malawi, Kenya, Uganda, and Nigeria.
Sr. Madge is the Spiritual Assistant for the St. Bernadine of Siena Fraternity in Wayne, IL and the Little Portion of St. Francis Fraternity in Valparaiso, IN. She is also on the national board of the American Society of Missiology.
